Valve Positioners — Technical Overview & Selection Guide
Overview
Valve positioners are control devices used with pneumatic, electric, or electro-pneumatic valve actuators to accurately control and maintain the position of a control valve according to the input control signal.
A valve positioner compares the desired valve position received from the control system with the actual valve position and adjusts the actuator output accordingly. This provides improved positioning accuracy, response, stability, and control performance in process applications.
Valve positioners are commonly used with PLC, DCS, SCADA, and other process control systems for precise flow, pressure, temperature, and level control.

Positioner Types & Operation
Pneumatic Valve Positioner
Pneumatic positioners use pneumatic input signals to regulate actuator pressure and maintain the required valve position.
They are suitable for applications where pneumatic control signals are available and where simple, reliable positioning is required.
Electro-Pneumatic Valve Positioner
Electro-pneumatic positioners convert an electrical control signal, commonly 4–20 mA, into a pneumatic output to operate the actuator.
They are widely used where electrical control systems are integrated with pneumatic valve actuators.
Digital / Smart Valve Positioner
Digital positioners use electronic control and feedback systems to provide accurate valve positioning and additional monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
Depending on design, they may support communication protocols such as HART or Fieldbus and provide configuration, calibration, diagnostic, and position-feedback functions.
