GLOBE VALVES — Technical Overview & Selection Guide
Overview
Globe valves are linear-motion valves designed primarily for flow regulation, throttling, and isolation in piping systems. They control flow by moving a disc against or away from a stationary seat, allowing accurate adjustment of fluid flow.
Globe valves are widely used where reliable throttling, flow control, and shut-off performance are required. Their design can be selected according to pressure, temperature, fluid characteristics, flow rate, and application requirements.

Materials
Common body materials include:
-
Carbon Steel
-
Stainless Steel
-
Alloy Steel
-
Cast Iron
-
Forged Steel, where applicable
Disc, stem, trim, and seat materials should be selected based on fluid compatibility, pressure, temperature, erosion, corrosion, velocity, and service requirements.
Trim & Seat
Typical trim and seat configurations may include:
-
Stainless Steel Trim
-
Alloy Trim
-
Hardened Trim
-
Metal-to-Metal Seats
-
Stellite® or equivalent hard-facing, where specified
-
Specialized trim for erosive or corrosive services
Trim and seat selection depends on process fluid, operating temperature, pressure, flow velocity, corrosion resistance, erosion resistance, and required service life.
End Connections
-
Flanged
-
Butt-Weld
-
Threaded, where applicable
-
Socket-Weld, where applicable
Operation
Globe valves may be operated using:
-
Handwheel
-
Gear Operator
-
Pneumatic Actuator
-
Electric Actuator
-
Hydraulic Actuator, where applicable
Actuation should be selected based on valve size, operating pressure, required control accuracy, operating frequency, accessibility, and automation requirements.
Testing & Inspection
Depending on project specifications and applicable standards, globe valves may undergo:
-
Shell/body pressure testing
-
Seat leakage testing
-
Backseat testing, where applicable
-
Dimensional inspection
-
PMI (Positive Material Identification)
-
MTC verification
-
NDE (Non-Destructive Examination)
-
Visual and surface inspection
-
Functional/operational testing
Quick Selection Guide
Flow Control: Determine whether the valve is required for throttling, regulation, isolation, or a combination of these functions.
Fluid: Identify whether the service is liquid, gas, steam, or another process fluid.
Size: Specify DN/NPS based on piping size, flow rate, and required control capacity.
Pressure: Provide operating and design pressure together with the applicable ASME pressure class.
Temperature: Specify operating and design temperature.
Valve Pattern: Select straight, angle, or Y-pattern according to piping arrangement, pressure drop, and service requirements.
Material: Select body, disc, stem, trim, and seat materials based on process conditions.
Flow Direction: Confirm the required flow direction according to the selected globe valve design and manufacturer requirements.
Pressure Drop: Evaluate allowable pressure loss, particularly where the valve will operate frequently in throttling service.
Operation: Specify manual, gear-operated, pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, or other actuation requirements.
Installation: Confirm installation orientation and accessibility for operation and maintenance.
Shut-Off: Define the required seat leakage and isolation performance.
Connection: Specify flanged, butt-weld, threaded, or socket-weld connection as applicable.
