Solenoid Valves — Technical Overview & Selection Guide

Overview

Solenoid valves are electrically actuated automatic valves designed to control the flow of liquids, gases, steam, air, and other compatible process media. They operate through an electromagnetic solenoid coil that moves a plunger or armature to open, close, or change the flow path.

Solenoid valves are widely used in applications requiring fast, reliable, and automated on/off flow control. They are commonly integrated with PLC systems, control panels, instrumentation systems, pneumatic equipment, process automation systems, and safety control circuits.

Materials

Common solenoid valve body materials include:

  • Brass

  • Stainless Steel

  • Carbon Steel

  • Aluminium, where applicable

  • Engineered Polymer, where applicable

Internal components such as plungers, armatures, springs, seats, orifices, guides, and seals should be selected according to fluid compatibility, pressure, temperature, corrosion, erosion, and operating frequency.

Seal & Seat Selection

Seal and seat materials are critical for reliable solenoid valve operation and should be selected according to the process medium and operating conditions.

Common sealing materials may include:

  • NBR

  • EPDM

  • FKM

  • PTFE

  • FFKM, where applicable

  • Other specialty elastomers or polymers

Selection may consider:

  • Fluid Compatibility

  • Operating Temperature

  • Operating Pressure

  • Chemical Exposure

  • Steam Service

  • Abrasion

  • Required Service Life

  • Leakage Requirements

For steam and high-temperature applications, suitable high-temperature sealing materials should be selected according to the valve design and service conditions.

Actual voltage and coil configurations should be selected according to the control system and manufacturer’s available options.

End Connections

Solenoid valves may be supplied with:

  • Threaded Ends

  • Flanged Ends

  • Compression Connections

  • Tube Connections

  • Push-In Connections

  • Other connections according to valve design

The end connection should match the piping system, pressure rating, fluid service, installation arrangement, and applicable project specifications.

Quick Selection Guide
