Pinch Valves — Technical Overview & Selection Guide

Overview

Pinch valves are quarter-turn or linear-actuated isolation and flow-control valves designed to regulate or stop the flow of fluids through a flexible elastomeric or polymer sleeve. The valve operates by mechanically compressing the sleeve to restrict or completely shut off the flow passage.

Pinch valves are particularly suitable for abrasive, corrosive, viscous, slurry, powder, and solids-containing media, where the full-bore sleeve provides effective isolation and minimizes contact between the process fluid and the valve body.

Key Features
  • Reliable isolation and flow control

  • Full-bore flow passage with low pressure drop when fully open

  • Suitable for abrasive and corrosive media

  • Excellent resistance to slurry and solids-containing fluids

  • Flexible sleeve provides effective shut-off

  • Process fluid is primarily contained within the sleeve

  • Reduced risk of clogging and dead zones

  • Suitable for liquid, slurry, powder, and granular services

  • Available for manual and automated operation

  • Suitable for horizontal and vertical installation, depending on design

  • Available in various sleeve and body materials

  • Available in different pressure ratings according to design and manufacturer

Common Pinch Valve Types
  • Manual Pinch Valve

  • Pneumatic Pinch Valve

  • Hydraulic Pinch Valve

  • Electric Pinch Valve

  • Open-Frame Pinch Valve

  • Enclosed-Body Pinch Valve

  • Air-Operated Pinch Valve

  • Mechanical Pinch Valve

  • Slurry Pinch Valve

  • Full-Port Pinch Valve

Materials

Common pinch valve body materials include:

  • Carbon Steel

  • Stainless Steel

  • Cast Iron

  • Ductile Iron

  • Alloy Steel, where applicable

The sleeve material is a critical selection parameter and should be chosen according to the fluid, temperature, pressure, particle size, concentration, abrasion, and chemical compatibility.

Common sleeve materials may include:

  • Natural Rubber

  • EPDM

  • Neoprene

  • NBR

  • Butyl Rubber

  • PTFE

  • Other specialty elastomers or polymers

Sleeve & Lining Selection

The sleeve or liner forms the primary wetted surface and should be selected according to process conditions.

Selection may consider:

  • Abrasion Resistance

  • Chemical Resistance

  • Temperature Resistance

  • Pressure Resistance

  • Solids Concentration

  • Particle Size

  • Fluid Compatibility

  • Vacuum Conditions

  • Required Service Life

For abrasive slurry applications, a highly abrasion-resistant rubber sleeve may be preferred, while chemically aggressive services may require a compatible synthetic elastomer or fluoropolymer lining.

End Connections

Pinch valves may be supplied with:

  • Flanged Ends

  • Wafer Connections

  • Lug-Type Connections, where applicable

  • Other connections according to valve design

The end connection should match the piping system, pressure requirements, installation arrangement, and applicable project specifications.

Operation

Pinch valves may be operated using:

  • Handwheel

  • Manual Lever

  • Pneumatic Actuator

  • Hydraulic Actuator

  • Electric Actuator

Pneumatic operation is commonly selected for automated slurry and process applications where frequent opening and closing or remote operation is required.

Quick Selection Guide

Fluid: Identify whether the service is liquid, slurry, powder, granular material, or another process medium.

Solids Content: For slurry service, provide solids concentration, particle size, density, and characteristics of the suspended material.

Abrasion: Evaluate the abrasive nature of the process fluid and select the sleeve material accordingly.

Chemical Compatibility: Confirm compatibility of the sleeve with the process fluid and any chemicals present.

Size: Specify DN/NPS based on piping size and required flow capacity.

Pressure: Provide operating and design pressure and confirm the applicable valve pressure rating.

Temperature: Specify minimum, normal, maximum operating temperature, and design temperature.

Flow Rate: Provide minimum, normal, and maximum flow requirements.

Sleeve Material: Select the elastomer or polymer based on abrasion, corrosion, temperature, and fluid compatibility.

Pressure Drop: Evaluate the required flow capacity and allowable system pressure loss.

Shut-Off: Define the required isolation and leakage performance.

Actuation: Specify manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric operation.

Installation: Confirm horizontal or vertical installation requirements according to the selected valve design.

Vacuum Service: Where applicable, specify whether the valve will operate under vacuum and provide the required vacuum conditions.

Operating Frequency: Provide expected cycle frequency where the valve will be frequently operated.

Connection: Specify flanged, wafer, or other applicable end connection.

Testing & Inspection

Depending on project specifications and applicable standards, pinch valves may undergo:

  • Body pressure testing

  • Sleeve pressure testing

  • Seat/shut-off leakage testing

  • Functional and operational testing

  • Dimensional inspection

  • Sleeve material verification

  • PMI (Positive Material Identification), where applicable

  • MTC verification

  • Visual and surface inspection

  • Actuator and accessory testing

  • NDE (Non-Destructive Examination), where applicable
