Limit Switches — Technical Overview & Selection Guide
Overview
Limit switches are electromechanical or electronic switching devices used to detect and indicate the position or movement of valves, actuators, machinery, and other mechanical equipment. They provide electrical signals when a defined mechanical position or travel limit is reached.
Limit switches are commonly installed with actuated valves and automated equipment to provide open, closed, intermediate-position, and travel-limit indication to control panels, PLC, DCS, SCADA, and other monitoring systems.
